Okay Google, Reimagine Search

Google IO 2013Google IO began today and while it turned out to be true that they didn’t have much in the way of hardware announcements, they made up for it with far too many other major anouncements for a single post. I’m just going to focus on two words: “Okay Google.”

Those two words will, starting this week, become your primary interface for Google Search. If you thought the Search interface was minimalist before, it has nothing over this. You don’t have to type anything, you don’t have to click anything. Any computing device with a microphone becomes a hands-free search experience.

“Okay Google, what was Siri?”

During the demo on stage, Google highlighted the usability of the service. In addition to doing standard Google searches without having to touch anything, the presenter was able to send an email, dictating the content and recipient in a very Siri-esque fashion. Given that this has more functionality than Siri and works on all platforms, even iOS, this is very big news. “Okay Google” is set to become 2013′s most-repeated phrase, derailing “Okay Glass,” the previous forerunner.

The system works through something they call “hotwording,” and keeps your microphone open so that you can wake the input system up using their key phrase, much like Google Glass. The new Google search will be available in Chrome OS, the Chrome browser, and all the Google search apps starting this week.

Is this going to change how you use Google search? Will you talk to your computer as though you were on the Enterprise, or will you continue using your keyboard? Let us know in the comments!
